THE BRIEF

In 2018 Sony Music UK undertook a Diversity & Inclusion corporate climate assessment. They wanted to understand how their employees viewed diversity and inclusion within the business and provide opportunities to create meaningful change. The Positive Influence team spotted an opportunity to create a pioneering inclusion and development programme aligned to these insights;  through a partnership with local London based charity Creative Mentor Network. The programme would provide every employee regardless of age, level, function or tenure a chance to nurture the talents and passions of London youth through a mentoring experience.

CONSULTATION

Applications opened in early 2019 through communication by the Chairman and CEO of Sony Music UK, Jason Iley. Over 17% of our business applied to be a part of the programme filling 25 places. CMN ensured suitable matches were made with the mentees and that there was a fair distribution of placements across the business, demonstrating that everyone has something to offer.

TIMELINE

Over 16 weeks our mentors experience a tailored programme of 6 workshops designed to:

■ Create a deeper understanding of barriers to access within the creative industries.

■ Develop their coaching and mentoring skills to both complement the mentoring experience and create future leaders for Sony Music.

■ Inspire advocates for change within our business who will continue to actively support a culture that has diversity and inclusion at the heart of it.

Alongside the 16 week programme mentors meet with their mentees at least every other week.

They work with together on skill development in areas of interest, helping to build strategies for success around their dreams and ambitions.

To support the partnership, mentees are provided with an introduction workshop to understand how best to work with their mentor; alongside being provided with a skills development guide to aid areas of focus and increase curiosity.

Together the mentor and mentee will work on a passion project to be presented at the graduation showcase.
